I have already posted on how the speed of volleyball has changed over time and how defence and transition has changed. This time I will look a little at combination play.
The pipe wasn’t very widely used in 1984, but when it was it was much slower than today.
The comparison isn’t fair as the pipe now has taken the place of frontrow combinations. How fast is the pipe compared to the combinations? In the videos below, today’s pipe is faster than the USA combinations and about the same as the Soviet version.
And just for fun, here is how Savin’s long quick (7, B quick, 31, however you prefer) compares with Russo from Italy. Timing about the same, but Savin never had to play against Australia 🙂
