Posted by I have written here and here about the volleyball Video Challenge System as it was used in the European Champions League Final Four. That system was based on the system used in the Polish League. In the Polish League teams can also challenge balls touched by the block. The system is intended to make things clearer and reduce disputes. Apparently it doesn’t always work.

In the end I think the main reason for including video review as part of the decision-making process is because when matches are telecast it is possible for the viewers to see horrible mistakes that are made, but can’t be changed, even when there is immediate compelling evidence.
The problem is that there will always be a fine line, its just that slow motion HD footage makes that line smaller. On the other hand, if you slow it down and watch it over and over again, maybe the ‘thickness’ of the line is actually the same?

I was at a match where they showed the replays on the scoreboard. Oddly, that didn’t work out well and they stopped it pretty fast.
There is another reason to use video. Bad decisions affect the lives of the participants.
