For almost as long as I’ve been seriously interested in volleyball, I’ve dreamt of seeing this match. The Olympic Final from 1980 between Soviet Union and Bulgaria. The Soviet team from this era was essentially unbeaten between 1977 and 1983 and in this time won 2 World Championships, 2 World Cups, 5 European Championships and 1 Olympics. The greatest unanswered question in volleyball history is who would have won an unboycotted 1984 Olympics. The team was coached by Vyacheslav Platonov and included Vyacheslav Zaytsev (#2) and Aleksander Savin (#3) who by any method of judgement are in the conversations for, respectively, best setter and best player of all time.

I love the portly second referee, These days referees have to have a suitable BMI to be appointed. Especially at the Olympics.

I grew up idolising the 1980s Soviet team. Got to see them win a European Championship in 1984 (I think), Savin gave my mate his game shirt after the final – which I still wear! I’ve seen many great teams since, but none like these guys. Thanks for posting the videos, great memories.
