The 1985 European Championships were held in The Netherlands. They were won for the eighth time in a row by the Soviet Union, and the fifth in a row under the coaching of the legendary Vyacheslav Platonov and led by Vyacheslav Zaitsev and Alexander Savin. Czechoslovakia broke Poland’s streak of four consecutive silver medals and up and coming France, preparing to host the following year’s World Championships, won the bronze becoming the first western European nation to win a medal since 1951.
Sorting through old hard drives, I came across a few short videos from the tournament and put them into a playlist. Soviet Union, France, Czechoslovakia, Italy, Poland and Bulgaria are featured. The list of legendary players featured includes Savin, Zaitsev, Stefan Chrtiansky, Wojciech Drzyzga, Andrea Lucchetta, Laurent Tillie and many others.
